Renewable power and heat generation next to the site of use

Convion’s fuel-cell systems enable combined power and heat generation based on renewable fuels close to the sites where the energy is needed. Customers using biogas may produce up to double the amount of electricity with the same amount of fuel compared to conventional solutions.

Problem

On a global scale, the generation of power and heat is still largely based on fossil fuels and centralised power plants. With the existing distributed energy production solutions using gaseous fuels, the efficiency rates and profitability of investments are often weak. Furthermore, in certain cases the combustion of gaseous fuels may cause hazardous local emissions, such as nitrogen and sulphur oxide emissions and fine particulate emissions.

Solution: renewable power and heat generation next to the site of use

Convion manufactures fuel-cell systems that produce power and heat from gaseous fuels, such as natural gas, biogas and nitrogen. The product enables profitable energy production near the site where the energy is needed, such as households and companies. The carbon dioxide emissions caused by the fuel cells are substantially lower than those caused by conventional energy production plants using natural gas.

Carbon dioxide emissions, on the other hand, remain almost negligible when the fuel cells are run on biogas. Furthermore, the fuel cells do not produce nitrogen, sulphur or fine particulate emissions, so the plants can be placed near housing. Convion’s solution also enables the use of small sources of biogas (e.g. farms).

Convion’s revenue logic and benefits

Convion develops, manufactures and supplies fuel-cell systems. The revenue logic is primarily based on product sales, but Convion’s systems can also be manufactured based on a licensing model or in collaboration with another operator. Testing of various revenue logic models helps a company in its early stages of operation to find the best operating model.

Benefits to customers and end users

Customers using biogas may be able to produce double the amount of electricity with the same amount of fuel compared to conventional solutions. The solution will help customers cut their energy costs and emissions. Companies producing biogas can use the gas directly in the fuel-cell system located at the production plant without any need for refining or transportation. The solution does not produce any local emissions and thus enables power and heat production in residential areas as well.
