Ecological compensation

A mechanism in which damage caused to nature by human activity in one place is compensated for by carrying out measures that strengthen biodiversity elsewhere. For example, forest felled as part of a construction project can be compensated for by rehabilitating an equivalent amount of a corresponding habitat (or in some cases, by preventing imminent damage through conservation measures) somewhere else so that biodiversity on the whole is not harmed.
