The jury decided that the winning designs E2volution (Team Arup) and Puu-Bo (Team Big) best represented the given assignment. The merits of the winning designs differ, but their characteristics are equally relevant in continuing the development of wooden multi-storey buildings.
The winners of the international E2 Timber Development Competition were 15.3.2011 in Kouvola. Of the four construction and structure design proposals that took part in the invitational competition, two were chosen as equal winners. The winning designs are E2volution with Arup GmbH as the team leader and Puu-Bo with Bjarke Ingels Group BIG as the team leader. The winning proposals serve as a basis for developing the wooden house concept and building multi-storey residential buildings by the Kymijoki River in Kuusankoski.
According to the jury, the E2volution design has structural clarity, based on the use of three basic elements. The structure enables quick construction and cost-effective transportation. The Puu-Bo design was seen as creating an interesting living environment while effectively taking the construction site and its surroundings into account.

The City of Kouvola organised the E2 (Ecology and Economy) Timber Development Competition in collaboration with the Finnish Forest Industries Federation, the Finnish Innovation Fund, the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation, KSS Energy, and the Regional Council of Kymenlaakso. The Competition is part of a larger project, WoodInno, which aims at establishing an industry of wooden house construction in the region, creating new jobs in Kouvola and founding a centre of wood expertise.
