Digital health and well-being services should be more human-centric and fair to all parties: individuals, businesses and society as a whole.

“With the Fair Health Data Challenge, we are looking for examples from all over Europe to show the way towards shared rules for a fair data economy,” says Jaana Sinipuro, Project Director at Sitra. “The aim is to identify Europe-wide existing or soon-to-be-published health and well-being solutions that are based on data sharing and fair principles.”

The challenge is aimed at businesses and other organisations that offer or develop digital health and well-being services.

An international panel will assess the entries. The areas to be assessed are: management of one’s own personal data; user friendliness and data accessibility; a model of data sharing; fairness; safety, security and confidentiality; the impact of the solution; innovation and trust. The assessment will be based on the assessment tool developed in Sitra’s fair data economy project.

The award includes tips for development and international visibility

The prize is the benefit of the expertise of an international jury, who will provide feedback to help the organisations representing the 10 most promising solutions to develop their solutions to make them even better. There will also be international visibility on offer, as the three best example solutions will be presented at the HIMMS Europe 2021 digital health event.

The challenge is being organised as part of Sitra’s IHAN project, which is laying the foundations for a fair data economy in which successful future digital services will be based on trust and generate value for everyone.

Sitra’s Towards trustworthy health data ecosystems working paper, published in the autumn of 2020, presents guidelines for how data can be used to promote health and well-being as well as what this will require from decision-makers and the entire health sector.

More detailed instructions and the application form are available on the Fair Health Data Challenge page.

The challenge opened on 3 February 2021 as part of Sitra’s Trusted! Quest for data-driven and fair health solutions online event, in which Sitra’s new Health Data 2030 project was also presented.
