The battery ecosystem of the future
The circular economy is also the future for battery ecosystems. A project headed by the Council of Tampere Region will increase knowledge of the circular economy in battery ecosystems and help those in the sector network.
Transport is experiencing a major revolution, and there is a huge demand for new intelligent and emission-free transport solutions. Electric cars are gradually becoming a part of the streetscape and huge growth is expected in electrical solutions for construction machinery. Batteries play an important part not only in the transport sector but also in the transformation of the energy sector, because the development of storage solutions for electricity will be one of the most important factors in the realisation of renewable energy growth.
Finland is already a pioneer in the field of circular economy solutions for batteries across a range of sectors, including in the manufacture of electrical machinery, large energy storage-related solutions and battery recycling solutions. However, the public is not yet aware of the enormous circular economy potential of batteries and their link to numerous fields.
The primary objective of the battery ecosystem in the future project will be to increase the circular economy at all stages of the battery’s lifecycle, and to highlight recycling solutions and raw materials for batteries as well as the global value chains related to batteries. Co-operation between research and development organisations involved in the battery economy, the private sector and authorities will increase understanding of the current level of Finnish expertise and innovation in the field of batteries and help us identify new development and business potential, which we can promote together.
What are we doing?
We will conduct interviews and literature reviews to identify those within the battery ecosystem and collect and disseminate information on battery markets, material flows, battery-related research projects and the recycling system.
Based on the results of this analysis work, workshops will be organised to promote networking between those working within the battery ecosystem and to focus on identifying their shared needs for piloting and trials, as well as their future business opportunities. Preparedness for the future will also play an important role, and a separate workshop will be held at which participants will discuss future challenges and opportunities. The Council of Tampere Region, together with experts, will draw up future scenarios on separately selected themes.
Who are involved?
The Council of Tampere Region, which is heading the project, is working in close co-operation with companies, public organisations and research institutes related to the battery ecosystem. The materials and results compiled during the project will be shared on the project’s website and directly with those participating in the battery ecosystem.
Where have we got to so far?
The project will run from January 2018 to the end of May 2019. The first analysis work to examine the current situation regarding batteries will begin immediately in early 2018, and the first workshop will be held in spring 2018. The need for battery-related pilots and trials will be examined and conceptualised at the spring 2018 workshop. Workshops to be held in autumn 2018 and spring 2019 will focus on promoting new business opportunities and examining the future. The project’s final seminar will be held in spring 2019.
