Teaching method packages for circular economy teaching

Ended project: 11/2017 – 12/2018

The Turku, Lahti and Tampere universities of applied sciences developed a methodology guide for teaching about the circular economy, which is now available to all educational institutions to use freely.

What was it about?

The project was part of the Circular economy teaching for all levels of education package implemented between 2017 and 2019. Sitra’s vision was that all graduates should understand what the circular economy means from the point of view of their work and day-to-day life, and what decisions and actions they can take to promote the circular economy. The aim was to increase expertise in the circular economy in Finland by extensively developing circular economy training, materials, concepts and co-operation from different points of view for all levels of education. More than 50 educational institutions, organisations and businesses took part in the package.

What was achieved?

The project piloted teaching about the circular economy using various methods in different study units. The project involved a total of 250 teachers and 680 university of applied sciences students.

The project also developed a methodology guide (in Finnish) on teaching about the circular economy for educational institutions to use. Existing pedagogic circular economy methods were developed and systemised for the guide in multidisciplinary teams in co-operation with stakeholders and the universities of applied sciences involved.

The guide introduces three methods for teaching about the circular economy. The methods can be adopted by anyone who works with students, regardless of their background. What the methods have in common are their multidisciplinary, project-like and working life-driven nature. The methods were developed for universities, but they can also be used in upper secondary education.

As a result of the project, the circular economy has spread as an idea and associated content is used in almost all fields of education at the Lahti University of Applied Sciences (LAMK).

You can read more about the project on the Turku UAS website.

Who was involved?

Sitra funded the project, and the people responsible for the project at Sitra were Riitta Silvennoinen and Nani Pajunen. The project’s main participants were the Turku University of Applied Sciences, Lahti University of Applied Sciences and Tampere University of Applied Sciences. Universities of Applied Sciences in Savonia, Vaasa and Oulu were also partnering the project, which was co-ordinated by Turku AMK and funded partly by Sitra and partly from the universities’ own financial resources.
