What is it about?

Better use of data offers new ways of delivering services and doing business. The Most Interesting Data Economy Solutions list is a collection of inspiring examples of how data can be used. It provides a comprehensive overview of the pioneers of the data economy.

The list includes insightful solutions across industries, consumer services and infrastructure solutions that are driving the data economy.

The list includes 24 different data-driven solutions that are presented in the articles.

Sitra selected the solutions for the new list together with an evaluation panel of data economy experts. Nearly 80 solutions applied for the list in an open call organised by Sitra in spring 2023.

What’s on the list?  

Finland has already proven its ability to deliver data-driven innovation. To help spread good examples of data use and inspire other innovators, the list showcases products and services that use data in smart ways.

The shortlisted solutions are divided into three categories:

  1. services for consumers
  2. services for businesses
  3. infrastructure solutions to boost the data economy

These solutions show how the opportunities of the data economy are already being seized upon in business, the public sector, education and research. Data has been used to make business more efficient or to create new ways of doing things.

How were the solutions evaluated?

A panel of experts convened by Sitra evaluated the applications according to the following criteria: 

  • Interesting: The solution is interesting and inspiring in terms of key principles related to data economy thinking and in particular new approaches.
  • Novelty: Data is shared, used and combined in totally new ways. 
  • Impactful: The solution improves business efficiency, boosts productivity or well-being or has a positive impact on nature. 
  • Scalability: The solution can be scaled up either by expanding or replicating it. 
  • Fair data economy compliant: where applicable, the solution reflects the trustworthiness, accessibility, human-centricity, value creation, skills development or sharing of data use. Read more about the principles of the fair data economy.  

The list of the Most Interesting Data Economy Solutions is part of Finland’s national Roadmap for a Fair Data Economy, which shows the way for actions that enhance well-being, the green transition and competitiveness.
