Roundtable: halting biodiversity loss through the circular economy

The Finnish Innovation Fund Sitra’s new study reveals that a circular economy can play a key role in halting and reversing global biodiversity loss. Join us to discuss the study’s findings and its linkages to key policy measures in the EU in a roundtable organised on 31 May in Brussels.

  • May 31, 2022 at 3:00 pm - 4:15 pm
  • Press Club Brussels and online

31 May, 2022 at 14:00-15:15 CEST. By Invitation only.

We are losing biodiversity at an alarming rate all over the world. The situation is alarming because our health, economy and well-being are all utterly dependent on nature and the services it provides.

Sitra’s study Tackling the root causes – halting biodiversity loss through the circular economy The circular economy An economic model which does not focus on producing more and more goods, but in which consumption is based on using services – sharing, renting and recycling – instead of owning. Materials are not destroyed in the end, but are used to make new products over and over again. Open term page The circular economy reveals that circular solutions can play a key role in halting global biodiversity loss.

It is the first study to quantify the role a circular economy can play in tackling global biodiversity loss across four key sectors with the largest impacts on biodiversity: food & agriculture, buildings & construction, textiles & fibres and forestry. Vivid Economics, which in 2021 developed analytics for the Dasgupta Review, have provided the analytical support for this study. The study will be published on May 16.

This roundtable brings together key EU stakeholders. During the 75-minute session, we will highlight the importance of ramping up EU action for biodiversity and widening the toolkit to include solutions that rethink how we produce, consume and manage in a circular economy. The event will present the findings from the new Sitra study and highlight key policy measures in the EU.

The roundtable is held at the Press Club in Brussels. Online participation is also possible.

The event is moderated by Maria Wetterstrand, Managing Director of Miltton Brussels.
