The Nordic Green to Scale study analysed scaling up nine Nordic climate solutions ranging from wind power to energy efficiency in buildings and low-carbon agriculture. These solutions could reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Kenya altogether by 23.5 million tonnes in 2030. This covers 16% of the projected business as usual emissions in 2030. The reduction would be larger than the total emissions of Namibia today.
The study also analysed the costs, savings and co-benefits of applying these solutions. While some solutions come at a net cost, some would provide significant net savings, making investing in them economically profitable. In addition, the study looked at the circumstances for implementing the solutions specific to Kenya.
“The study shows that Kenya could reduce emissions significantly by simply scaling up existing, proven and attractive climate solutions – and only to the extent that some countries have done already. Implementing these solutions would provide many benefits to the Kenyan society, including energy generation for the local communities, job creation and biodiversity conservation”, comments climate specialist Tuuli Hietaniemi from the Finnish Innovation Fund Sitra.
“The need for countries to deal with climate change is inevitable and scaling up solutions such as those presented in this report in countries like Kenya and Ethiopia, potentially could contribute to reduced emissions”, observes Mbeo Ogeya, a researcher at SEI Africa.
The study Nordic Green to Scale for countries – Unlocking the potential of climate solutions in Kenya and Ethiopia was financed by the Nordic Council of Ministers and co-ordinated by Sitra. The Stockholm Environment Institute Africa Centre carried out the analysis.
The results were released today in Kenya during the TRANSrisk seminar in Nairobi. Speakers included; SEI Africa Director Evelyn Namubiru-Mwaura, Eng. Isaac Kiva, Director of Renewable Energy, Ministry of Energy, Ms. Tuuli Hietaniemi, Specialist, Finnish Innovation Fund Sitra; and Mr. Mbeo Ogeya, Research Fellow and LEAP Tool Specialist, SEI Africa Centre. The Ambassador of Finland Mr Erik Lundberg opened the event, which was organised by SEI Africa Centre with support from Sitra and the Finnish embassy.
