In addition to ice hockey and a northern location, Finland and Canada share a concern for climate change and a commitment to achieving the Paris climate agreement goals. Finland has an ambitious goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2035. Reaching this goal calls for bold renewals, and one of the most significant changes this calls for, is the transition from a traditional, linear economy to a low-carbon circular economy.

The time and place of the World Circular Economy Forum 2020 were announced today by Canada’s new Minister of Environment and Climate Change Jonathan Wilkinson, together with Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources Seamus O’Regan and the Finnish Minister of  Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade Ville Skinnari. The WCEF2020 will be hosted by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) and Sitra, and organised in co-operation with partners.

Forum partners include the Circular Economy Leadership Coalition, the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, the European Commission, the Government of Finland, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, the Platform for Accelerating the Circular Economy, the United Nations Environment Programme, and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development.

What is WCEF?

The World Circular Economy Forum (WCEF) is a global initiative of Finland and Sitra. It brings together more than 2,000 business leaders, policymakers and experts from around the world to present the world’s best circular economy solutions. The WCEF examines how businesses can seize new opportunities, gain a competitive advantage through circular economy solutions and how the circular economy contributes to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

So far, the forum has been organised in Helsinki, Finland in 2017 and 2019 and in Yokohama, Japan in 2018.
